How can I save my system?

I've lost my "Windows root>/system 32/hal.dll." My system is over six(6) yrs.old. It was manufactured with "Window XP Home",and upgraded to "Windows XP Professional". I'm told the manufactor no longer produces the recovery disc for the Hareware Abstraction Layer. And because of the upgrade, the initial file no longer exist within my system. Also, I'm told that my only recourses are to back up my files onto a writable discs and discard my system and purchase a new system. I'm in pocession of a HP Pavillion 552w. I surely want to retain my files,(music and photos). And really, I'd like to retain my system. Are there any suggestions or solutions out there. Please respond. Thanks, Ole-Skool.
